IJMB vs JUPEB: Everything You Need to Know to Gain 200-Level Admission Without JAMB

Two government-approved A-Level programmes, one powerful outcome — skipping 100 level and gaining direct entry into any Nigerian university. Here is the honest, no-fluff breakdown you've been looking for.

🗓 Updated: 29th of August, 2026 ✍️ Detailed and expert guide 📌 Covers both IJMB & JUPEB in full

IJMB vs JUPEB: Welcome to your Ultimate 2026/2027 guide for Direct Entry Success in Nigeria! Every year, more than 1.5 million Nigerians sit for the JAMB/UTME examination. Only a fraction of them secure admission. Many score well above 200 points and still spend a second — or third — year waiting. If that is your story, or if you're a fresh secondary school leaver who simply wants a smarter, faster route to the university, this guide is for you.

IJMB and JUPEB are Nigeria's two most widely accepted Advanced Level (A-Level) direct entry programmes. Both allow you to bypass the JAMB rat race entirely and gain admission straight into 200 level — saving you one full academic year and, in many cases, hundreds of thousands of naira in tuition fees that would have gone to 100-level studies.

💡 Key Insight
Unlike a UTME result, which expires after one year and must be re-sat, both IJMB and JUPEB certificates have long-term validity (IJMB up to 7 years, JUPEB up to 3 years). You earn them once and use them at your convenience.

This guide covers both programmes from the ground up — history, requirements, fees, subject combinations, university lists, grading systems, and an honest verdict on which one suits your specific situation. Let's get into it.

1. What Is IJMB?

IJMB stands for Interim Joint Matriculation Board. It is a nine-month Advanced Level programme that has been in existence since 1976, making it one of the longest-standing alternative entry programmes in Nigerian education. The programme is supervised, coordinated, and moderated by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria — one of Nigeria's most prestigious federal universities.

Ahmadu Bello University Zaria – the body that moderates the IJMB programme

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria — the moderating institution for the IJMB programme since its establishment in 1976.

Originally created to improve educational access for students in Nigeria's northern region, IJMB has since expanded nationally. Today, it operates through a network of accredited study centres across all geopolitical zones. The Federal Government officially recognises IJMB through the Nigerian University Commission (NUC), and the JAMB brochure lists it as a valid basis for Direct Entry admission.

How the IJMB Programme Works

Once you register at an accredited IJMB study centre, you attend intensive weekday lectures (Monday–Friday) for nine months, divided into two semesters. At the end of the programme, you sit a final examination in three subjects of your choice — plus compulsory English Language. Your result is graded on a points scale (A through F), and you then apply for Direct Entry admission to your university of choice via JAMB's DE portal.

✅ IJMB Fast Facts
Established: 1976  |  Moderating Body: ABU Zaria  |  Duration: 9 months (2 semesters)  |  Exam Months: Typically June/July  |  Result Validity: Up to 7 years  |  Accepted by: 80%+ of Nigerian universities

2. What Is JUPEB?

JUPEB stands for Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. It is a newer programme, approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria in December 2013, and coordinated by the University of Lagos (UNILAG). While it mirrors IJMB in structure, JUPEB was specifically designed to serve Nigeria's southern universities and to carry international recognition comparable to the British A-Levels or Cambridge International AS/A Levels.

What sets JUPEB apart at the foundational level is its consortium model — it was created by a group of major federal universities collectively known as the "partner universities." Each partner institution runs its own JUPEB centre and admits successful JUPEB candidates directly, without a post-UTME screening for DE applicants in many cases.

How the JUPEB Programme Works

Like IJMB, JUPEB runs for nine to twelve calendar months, split into two semesters with full-time lectures at an accredited centre or partner university. Students select three subjects relevant to their intended course of study, plus a compulsory General Studies (GST) component (which includes English proficiency). Final examinations are typically held in August or September each year.

✅ JUPEB Fast Facts
Established: 2013  |  Moderating Body: University of Lagos  |  Duration: 9–12 months (2 semesters)  |  Exam Months: August–September  |  Result Validity: Up to 3 years  |  Accepted by: 70%+ of Nigerian universities + select foreign universities

3. Key Statistics at a Glance

1.5M+ Nigerians who write JAMB/UTME annually
70%+ IJMB candidates who successfully gain university admission
70%+ JUPEB candidates who successfully gain 200-level admission
80%+ Nigerian universities that accept IJMB certificates
9 Months duration (both programmes)
1976 Year IJMB was established in Nigeria

These numbers tell an important story: the odds of gaining admission through IJMB or JUPEB are significantly better than competing through UTME. With approximately 20,000 JUPEB applicants versus 1.5 million UTME candidates, the pool is dramatically smaller — which means university places allocated for direct entry are far less contested.

5. Grading Systems Explained

IJMB Grading (Point System)

IJMB uses a point-based grading system. Each subject is graded from A to F, with a corresponding point value. Your total is the sum of points from your three subjects, plus a bonus point if you have no "F" grade in your result. This means the maximum achievable score is 16 points.

GradePointsInterpretationAdmission Impact
A5DistinctionQualifies for any course, any university
B4Very GoodQualifies for competitive courses (Medicine, Law, Engineering)
C3GoodMost courses accepted
D2PassQualifies for many arts/social science courses
E1Weak PassMinimum threshold reached
F0FailDoes not count; no bonus point awarded
+1 Bonus PointAutomatically awarded if no "F" appears in any subject

Example: A student scoring A in Physics, B in Chemistry, and C in Biology would have: 5 + 4 + 3 = 12, plus 1 bonus point (no F) = 13 points total. This is sufficient for Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, Law, and all other competitive programmes at accepting universities.

📊 Minimum IJMB Points by Course Type
8 points and above: Medicine, Law, Engineering, Nursing, Sciences, Medical Lab, Political Science
5–7 points: Arts, Social Sciences, Agriculture, Education, and Management courses
4 points: Some private and state universities accept 4 points for certain faculties

JUPEB Grading (University GPA Scale)

JUPEB uses the standard university grading scale, which should feel familiar to anyone who has used a GPA system. Each subject is graded from A to F, and the aggregate score from your three subjects determines your admission eligibility. Individual JUPEB-affiliated universities set their own minimum requirements for specific courses.

GradeScore Range (%)Grade PointRemarks
A70 – 1005.0Excellent — Opens all doors
B60 – 694.0Very Good — Competitive courses accessible
C50 – 593.0Good — Most programmes open
D45 – 492.0Pass — Limited course options
E40 – 441.0Marginal — Very few options
F0 – 390Fail — No admission value

6. Entry Requirements

Both programmes have broadly similar entry requirements, which is one reason so many students ask "which should I choose?" rather than "am I eligible?" Here is what you need:

IJMB Requirements
✅ O'Level result (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, WASSCE, GCE, IGCSE, or equivalent)
✅ Minimum of 5 credits, including English Language and Mathematics
✅ Awaiting results candidates are accepted
✅ No JAMB score required
✅ Maximum of 2 O'Level sittings permitted
✅ 8 recent passport photographs
✅ Printed and signed IJMB admission letter after registration
JUPEB Requirements
✅ O'Level result (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, GCE, or equivalent)
✅ Minimum of 5 credits including English Language and Mathematics
✅ Awaiting results candidates are accepted
✅ No JAMB score required
✅ Must register with an accredited JUPEB affiliate centre
✅ Subject combinations must match intended course of study
✅ Must also register for JAMB Direct Entry at the appropriate time
⚠️ Important Note for Both Programmes
Even after passing IJMB or JUPEB, you will still need to register for JAMB Direct Entry (DE) — this is separate from UTME and costs considerably less. Some universities may also conduct a screening exercise (not a full post-UTME) for DE applicants. Check your target university's requirements early.

10. Universities That Accept IJMB & JUPEB

This is often the most critical factor in choosing between the two programmes — your target university's policy. Here is the clear breakdown:

Universities That Accept IJMB (See List)

  • Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
  • University of Ilorin
  • Bayero University, Kano
  • University of Maiduguri

⚠️ Universities That Do NOT Accept IJMB
The following major universities do not accept IJMB for direct entry admission: University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Port Harcourt, University of Calabar, and Lagos State University (LASU). If any of these is your target institution, JUPEB is your better choice.

11. Fees and Cost Breakdown

Cost is often the deciding factor for many families. Here is the honest picture:

Cost ItemIJMB FeeJUPEB Fee
Application/Form Fee₦15,400₦25,670
Tuition Fees (Approx.)₦270,000 – ₦340,000₦370,000 – ₦390,000
Hostel / Accommodation (Optional)₦80,000 to ₦150,000₦80,000 to ₦150,000
Textbooks & Materials₦50,000₦50,000
JAMB Direct Entry Form~₦6,000~₦6,000
Estimated Total₦385,000 – ₦515,000₦445,000 – ₦575,000
💰 Cost Perspective
Consider that many private universities in Nigeria charge over ₦500,000 for 100-level tuition alone. By gaining 200-level direct entry through IJMB or JUPEB, you effectively skip that year entirely — saving more money than the programme costs, while also saving a full academic year of your life. Note that you can also pay in instalment. The minimum you can start with for IJMB is ₦180,000 while JUPEB is ₦200,000.

12. Subject Combinations Guide

Your subject combination is one of the most important decisions you'll make during registration. The wrong combination can disqualify you from your desired course at the university level, even if you ace the exams. See below IJMB Subject Combination and JUPEB Subject Combination:

Intended CourseRecommended Subject CombinationValid for Both IJMB & JUPEB
Medicine & Surgery / PharmacyBiology, Chemistry, Physics✅ Yes

AgricultureBiology, Chemistry, Agricultural Science or Physics✅ Yes

🔑 Pro Tip: Verify with Your Target University
Always cross-check your subject combination against your specific target university's Direct Entry requirements in the JAMB brochure. Some universities — particularly those running JUPEB internally — have slightly unique requirements for certain departments. Getting this wrong at the start is harder to fix than it seems.

13. IJMB or JUPEB — Which Should You Choose?

There is no universal "better" programme. The right answer depends entirely on your target university, your budget, and your long-term plans. Here is a practical decision framework:

Choose IJMB if…
🟢 Your target university is ABU, UNILORIN, or any northern/private university
🟢 You are on a tighter budget (IJMB is significantly cheaper)
🟢 You want a longer result validity period (up to 7 years)
🟢 You want maximum nationwide coverage
🟢 You don't plan to study abroad immediately after
Choose JUPEB if…
🔵 Your dream school is UNILAG, OAU, UNN, UNIPORT, or UNICAL
🔵 You want the possibility of using your result abroad
🔵 Your family can afford the higher tuition fees
🔵 You prefer being based at a university-affiliated study centre
🔵 Your preferred course requires JUPEB specifically

Our Verdict

For most Nigerian students — especially those targeting the vast majority of federal, state, and private universities — IJMB offers unbeatable value for money. It is cheaper, nearly as widely accepted, and has the backing of ABU Zaria behind it since 1976.

However, if UNILAG, OAU, UNIPORT, or UNN is non-negotiable for you, JUPEB is not just the better option — it is the only option. It is also worth the premium if you have any plans to use your A-Level result internationally.

The most important thing you can do right now is check the JAMB brochure's Direct Entry section for your specific university and confirm which certificate it accepts. Let that answer guide everything else.

14. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my IJMB or JUPEB result in multiple years?

Yes. IJMB results are valid for up to 7 years, while JUPEB results are valid for up to 3 years. This means you can sit the exams now and use the result whenever you're ready — a significant advantage over UTME, which expires after one year.

Do I still need to register with JAMB after IJMB or JUPEB?

Yes, but only for JAMB Direct Entry (DE), not UTME. The DE registration process is simpler, less expensive, and specifically designed for candidates who have A-Level qualifications. You use your IJMB or JUPEB result as the qualification for this application.

Can I apply for IJMB or JUPEB with awaiting O'Level results?

Yes. Both programmes accept candidates with awaiting O'Level results. However, you must have obtained your full O'Level result before you apply for Direct Entry university admission. During the 9-month programme, you should have enough time to sit and receive your WAEC, NECO, or equivalent results.

Is IJMB or JUPEB recognised by federal universities?

Both are recognised by the NUC (Nigerian University Commission) and are listed in the JAMB brochure as valid Direct Entry qualifications. The difference lies in which federal universities accept each one — IJMB has stronger penetration in the north, while JUPEB covers the major southern federal universities that IJMB does not reach.

What is the minimum IJMB point for Medicine?

Most universities require a minimum of 8 points for competitive courses like Medicine, Law, Engineering, Nursing, and Medical Laboratory Science. To study Medicine, you ideally want at least 12–13 points (e.g., ABB or above in your three science subjects).

Can I register for IJMB if I've never written JAMB?

Absolutely. IJMB does not require any JAMB/UTME score whatsoever. As long as you have (or are awaiting) O'Level results with the minimum five credits including English and Mathematics, you are eligible to register for IJMB and pursue 200-level admission entirely without UTME.

How difficult are the IJMB and JUPEB examinations?

Both exams are Advanced Level examinations — they are more rigorous than O'Level but entirely passable with consistent study and good coaching. The structured nine-month lecture programme at any reputable centre is designed to adequately prepare you. Students who attend classes regularly and engage seriously with the material typically perform well.

Can I study any course with IJMB or JUPEB?

Yes — there is no course restriction on either programme, provided you select the correct subject combination. You can study Medicine, Law, Engineering, Computer Science, Accounting, Mass Communication, Agriculture, Architecture, and everything else — as long as your three subjects match the requirements for that course at your target university.

What’s the best alternative to JAMB?

The best alternative to JAMB is to enroll for A'Level programme like IJMB or JUPEB

Should I do IJMB or JUPEB in 2026?

Both IJMB and JUPEB serves the same purpose. The choice of which one to register for depends on what you can afford and the choice of university want to apply into after you are done with any of the programme. If you want something affordable, go for IJMB. If you want something that is accetable by more universities like UNILAG, LASU, UNILORIN, UNN, etc., go for JUPEB. Always check JAMB brochure for the admission requirement for your choice of university for which of the programme acceptable.

Which one gives admission faster?

You have to consider when the examination is written every year and when the result is released to know which one can be used to secure admissin on time. IJMB exam is written in June and and the result is released before September of every year. JUPEB examination is written in August and the result is released before November of every year. In most cases, the results are released before university admission window close for the year.
